College Essay Coaching

Ms. Freedman's help was invaluable in writing my personal statement! She was very understanding and provided me with structure throughout the process. Whenever I couldn't put my thoughts into writing, she was always there to guide me to an articulate answer. I'm very proud of the essay, and it wouldn't have been possible without Ms. Freedman. Thank you! - Eric K., High School Senior, Pennsylvania

Overview:  No matter where you are in the process I am happy to help, whether you are just starting or simply need someone to proofread your final draft! I can help with both the personal statement and supplemental essays.

If you are looking for assistance with the entire personal statement writing process, this typically includes three to five Zoom meetings. I also write feedback on each essay draft. I prefer to give feedback using Google docs, though Microsoft Word can also be used.

The Zoom sessions are typically between 20-30 minutes, except for the first one, which is a little longer. I walk students through the essay writing process, from selecting a topic to organizing their ideas to editing and revising.  Below is an overview of Zoom sessions for students desiring assistance with the personal statement.  (The process is similar for supplemental essays.) Please note that I tailor the sessions to each individual student.

The Personal Statement Writing Process

Session 1:  Getting to Know You / Brainstorming

  • I’ll spend the first few minutes asking them about their background.  I enjoy getting to know my students, and it’s nice to establish a rapport from the beginning. Plus, after hearing about the student’s life and experiences, I can offer a suggestion about what would make a good essay topic.

  • We talk about the components of a strong college essay, and what admissions counselors are looking for.

  • Sometimes the student will already have an idea of what they want to write about.  If not, I lead the student through one or two brainstorming exercises.

  • Before the end of the session, the student will have an idea of 1-2 possible essay topics.

  • We will talk about organization, and how they should structure the piece.

Session 2:  Writing Workshop

  • The student should send me a draft of their essay at least 48 hours before this session.  It does not need to be complete just yet, and could be a few paragraphs.  It could also be two different essays that the student is trying to decide between.

  • I will leave comments on the draft ahead of the Zoom session, and we will use the session to discuss this feedback.  If they are trying to decide between two essay topics, I will help them to do this.

  • The homework is to make revisions to their essay using the feedback I gave them.

Session 3: Writing Workshop, Continued

  • The student should send me the next draft of their essay at least 48 hours before this session.  At this point it should have more of a final draft feel.

  • I will leave comments on the draft ahead of the Zoom session, and we will use the session to discuss this feedback.

  • The student’s homework is to make revisions to their essay, using my feedback.

Sessions 4 – 5 (Optional / As Needed)

  • If more sessions appear to be necessary, I am happy to continue working with the student for a fourth and fifth session.

My Philosophy:

My job as a writing coach is to help the student write a great college essay that will stand out and make a great impression.  That said, I feel that I have a second, equally important role; helping the student get through the pressure of senior year, and gain confidence in their writing.  I still remember how grueling it was to balance classes, after school activities, a part-time job – and apply to college on top of it all!
